Cause

Most of us either know someone who is affected by this condition or perhaps are ourselves affected. The fact is that hair loss is not peculiar to men, it does occur in women too. The earliest indications of this affecting people are found in ancient finds and narratives.

In some societies in the past it was believed that to be bald headed was regarded to be a sign of wealth. In some it was said to be associated with being virile and manly. We all know that that isn’t the case and in fact baldness (alopecia) is a condition found mainly in males, most of it is due to a genetic susceptibility of certain individuals to the ill effects of some chemicals in the body. The affected persons are not necessarily producing excessive amounts of the chemical, DHT(Dihydro testosterone).

It is present in all individuals and is the active form of the male hormone. In bald headed men, the hair follicle are very susceptible to the damaging effects of this active form of testosterone, which contradicts the popular belief that contrary to the belief that people who are bald have high levels of testosterone. This chemical then stifles the growth of hair follicles and thus slowly ’suffocates’ the hair follicles so that when they hair fall or is cut the new hair that grows is thinner than what has been before it. Eventually the hair will become so small that it is hard visible to the eye and then you get the bald head.

Remedies:

Numerous attempts in the past were made to find a cure. People used anything in the hope that their hair will grow again. A lot of substances were marketed by many in the promise of a cure to people. But of course as with many things developed by untrained and unqualified individuals and groups it turned out to be empty promises in most cases. Some of these people had a genuine belief that their preparations worked but a great many of them knew it did not. It should also be noted that there are many causes of hair loss and no single solution should be used to treat all forms of hair loss. Hereditary pattern hair loss in men is by far the most common form of hair loss.

Finally though a medically proven and successfully remedy was discovered, but there was a downside. Its limitation was that like all medicines there were some side effects, many of these side effects were reversible on stopping the medication. The most notable and by far the most common was loss of libido and this turned out to be the downfall of this wonderful drug. Since the medicine is taken by mouth it was not only available in the scalp area which was where it is required and is carried in the blood to other parts of the body. This resulted in the loss of libido for those taking the drug. Young men in their prime are the first to notice and most are discouraged by reduced or even obliterated response to their partners while on this drug. So, there arose the question of developing a drug that will act only where it is needed.

A topical solution was sough and the breakthrough came in the form a wonder solution named Minoxidil. It is by far the most common topical agent for the treatment of hair loss. It is a "wonderful little" (in the form of a solution) potion that is simply applied to the affected areas and the result are often dramatic. You should start noticing hair re-appearing again. I have personally used this and I have my hair back, some time I wonder if I ever had male pattern hair loss. This solution works by preventing the conversion of testosterone into DHT and thus will allow hair to literarily resurrect. It has practically no side effects because it is applied only over the areas affected and does not go into the blood stream and any significant quantity. They come in different concentration the 5% solution is the most effective and useful in a majority of hair loss cases. This remedy has proven it effectiveness in men as well as women, who are experience hair loss,

Before solving a problem one must understand the problem. Hair loss is the most common medical problem. Millions of people all over the world are struggling in the endless battle to stop their hair loss. How ever, most of them did not spend a couple of minutes learning what exactly the meaning of hair loss is. Read the following lines to learn the basics about hair, hair loss and hair loss treatments.

Did you know that an average scalp has about 150,000 hair follicles and hair – more than 90% of them are continuously growing.

What is hair?
Hair is the fastest growing tissue of the body. It is made of keratins which are a type of proteins. Each hair strand includes three layers: the medulla (the inner layer), the cortex and the cuticle. Hair grows from roots – Those roots get the vital ingredients to the hair growth by the blood. The roots are a living tissue but the visible hair strand is a dead tissue. Therefore, any hair loss treatment should take care of the scalp and roots and not of the hair strands.

How does the hair grow?
It is natural to loose hair. Actually, we all loose about 100 hairs a day. We start noticing that we suffer from hair loss only after losing more than 50% of our hair.

The phases of the life cycle of hair are:
Anagen – In this phase the hair is actively growing. This phase lasts about 5 years.
Catagen – In this phase the hair falls out. It lasts about 3 weeks.
Telogen – In this phase the hair is resting. It lasts about 12 weeks.

What are the causes of hair loss?
There are various conditions that may cause hair loss from heritage to stress. For each cause one may find different hair loss treatments. Hair loss treatments include anything from the FDA approved hair loss drug called Propecia or Rogaine to natural hair loss treatments as Rogaine to hair transplant surgeries.

911 Corp. executed an independent research to find the best hairloss treatments. The results were clear. Find out all about the results and other hair loss information on hair loss treatments and information http://www.911stophairloss.com – Hair loss and other hair issues.

Many people fail to realize how greatly stress affects one’s physical health. In some cases, stress is beneficial, because it encourages some people to remain focused, motivated to complete task and fulfill goals. Some individuals need stress in order to function at maximum efficiency. However, there are also negative sides of stress that can not only be harmful but lead you down a destructive path physically and emotionally. Stress, if not dealt with properly, could eventually lead to sudden mental and physical illnesses and conditions. Often, our hair is one of the first places affected when dealing with stress.

Sudden hair loss due to stress is called Telogen Effluvium. Telogen Effluvium occurs when sudden or severe stress causes an increase in the shedding of hair thus causing the hair follicles to be pushed prematurely into the resting phase. Sudden hair loss can be noticed 2 to 3 months after a stressful event has occurred. While it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day, stress related hair loss can increase hair shedding to as much as 300 - 400 strands of hair per day and one can lose up to 70% of scalp hairs. In most cases the sudden hair loss is temporary and the hair recovers quickly. However, in some cases the sudden hair loss continues until the underlying cause of the stress is fixed.

Identifying the cause of one’s sudden hair loss and treating it naturally, is the best way to recover from stress related hair loss; but it is not always the easiest thing to do. In some cases, stress has become such a major and vital part of one’s daily routine that it can be very difficult to separate oneself from the need for it. Statistics show that over 80% of people are overstressed, in some capacity, and may be suffering from some health condition because of it. Most Americans live such busy lives and suffer from the weight of responsibilities with jobs and family that we allow our health habits to fall. Sudden hair loss is not a direct side effect of stress, but it comes as a result of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle caused by the reality of stressful conditions in our lives. Therefore, it is very important for every individual suffering from sudden hair loss to understand what causes stress, how it affects one’s health, and how to either get rid of or cope with one’s stress.

The following is a list of things one can do to cope with stress. In order to completely get rid of your stress and cure it, one has to devise a list of all of your problems and deal with them head on. Ignoring your problems and disassociating yourself from stressful events only serves to bring temporary relief but not a permanent cure. The following list are ways one can cope with stress.

EXERCISE
Researchers have discovered that regular exercise decreases the production of adrenaline and will counteract the stress response. Physical activity of any kind is an effective way to relieve stress and will usually leave you feeling relaxed and rational about your problems. Researchers have also found that those who exercise regularly sleep and relax better.

SLEEP \ RELAXATION
Having healthy sleep habits and relaxation rituals are a very important part of eliminating stress. If you set aside at least 20 minutes each day in a quiet room to relax your mind and focus on good thoughts, you will notice a change in one’s attitude toward stress. You can also use this time to pray and meditate on bible scriptures. Finding some time during your day to quiet oneself can be very therapeutic in producing an effective and appropriate response in stressful conditions. Proper sleep is also important in coping with stress. Everyone knows how much sleep they need, but too much or too little sleep can affect one’s health in different ways. An abnormal sleep pattern can cause skin deterioration and sudden hair loss.

DIET
Stress at home and at the workplace can have a drastic effect on one’s eating habits. The abuse of alcohol, drinking coffee, and smoking are all effects that stress can have in improper nutrition and diet. Lack of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet can lead to iron deficiency or anemia that can contribute to sudden hair loss. A fundamental principal in natural hair loss treatment is that the same foods that are good for your health, are good for your hair. Although sudden hair loss can be caused by many other variables, lack of proper nutrition will cause hair loss in most people. Foods that are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and have reduced fat content can help in maintaining healthier hair and preventing sudden hair loss.

The list above is only a means to stress relief, and not a cure for stress related hair loss, or Telogen Effluvium. The best possible way to treat one’s sudden hair loss is by dealing with the root problem behind the stress. Exercise, diet and sleep can never eliminate the problem but can only help you cope with it in a positive and healthy manner. As a society, we blame stress on everyone and everything except ourselves and the fact is the only person responsible for your stress is you. Having the wrong attitudes, and our fears\ phobias contribute to creating more stress in our lives. Dealing with fears and anxiety with a positive attitude can help you overcome the stress in your life. The good news is, that one’s sudden diffuse hair loss can be dealt with and there are easy and effective ways to deal with stress and thus prevent sudden hair loss.

Everyone has some hair loss from day to day. In fact, it is normal to lose between 50 to 100 strands of hair a day. However, due to genetic reasons, diseases, medications, stress, injury, or an unhealthy diet, some people lose a lot more hair than expected. This is when it becomes a condition that requires medical attention. Regardless of the cause of hair loss, billions of dollars will be spent on hair loss solutions this year. Much of this money will go to waste. Ineffective products and misleading advertising are only partially to blame. Many consumers are not using these hair loss products in an effective way and even those that does most often jump from one treatment procedure to the other before any reasonable results could be seen.

As with any treatment procedure, treating hair loss requires some research, much of which goes into finding the right product out of the myriad of drugs and procedures out there that every one wants to sell. It also demands some discipline to follow a treatment regime to a reasonable level before concluding ‘it isn’t going to work’ and jumping off to another.

Following these simple tips should improve your success rate with whatever treatment option you follow and also ensure that your money does not go to waste.

Keep Records - You probably will try out several different hair loss products before you find something that works for you. Some people even use two or more products simultaneously. Keeping track of all this information can be frustrating and difficult. The best way to figure out what is working is to keep a record detailing your progress. You should record all relevant information about the treatment process: when you started, the dosage, cost, and any side effects you experience. This documentation will tell you which products are effective, which ones are not, and allow you to make necessary changes as you go ahead

Keep pictures of your progress - Noticing small changes in your hairline over time is extremely difficult. Taking pictures on a regular basis is the most effective ways to track your progress. Always photograph your head from the same angle, in similar lighting conditions. Use a digital camera for best results, most will automatically record the date and time for you. When combined with a treatment journal, these photos provide an invaluable tool that will allow you to judge the effectiveness of products you use.

Don’t be fooled - There are tons and tons of products out there that make outrageous claims about their ability to treat hair loss. The Internet has made it a lot easier to get the best and the worst products. Finding out which ones are legitimate can be a difficult task. When researching products online, beware of those that sound too good to be true. If the company has before and after pictures, examine them closely. If the images were shot from different angles, or in different lighting, be suspicious. These techniques are common camera tricks used to fool the eye, and the consumer. When a company claims their product has a "98% success rate", look for documentation of their clinical study. If the clinical information they provide is vague, or even missing altogether, be suspicious.

These tips won’t help you get the best product for your hair loss treatment but it will most certainly help you to make the best use of whatever product you decide to try out. If you follow these steps through the period of your hair loss treatment your chances of success are excellent. And always remember it does not pay to jump from product to product. It only makes a fool of you and helps you waste your hard earned bucks. Any successful treatment regime demands dedication. Whatever the procedure, following it through carefully is the best you can do for yourself.

In this article we’re going to discuss the options for people who suffer from hair loss, assuming their hair does not grow back naturally.

In the old days there weren’t many options at all. The most common thing to do if you were a man suffering from hair loss was to go out and buy a toupee. Depending on how severe your hair loss was this was either a partial toupee, covering the top or front of the scalp or a full blown wig covering the whole head. If this is still your preferred method of covering up your hair loss it would be best to get a very expensive toupee. Cheap ones look like toupees. Expensive ones actually look like real hair and many of them are partially made from real hair. A very realistic toupee can cost you as much as $800 or more. Even cheap ones are not cheap and can run well over $150 but cheap ones look terrible and you’ll look worse than if you just went with no hair at all.

After the toupee there are a number of hair loss treatments.

One type of hair loss restoration is non surgical bio matrix. This is a process where real human hair is added to your hair by a process where the hair is woven together with your own. They do this in the areas where you are balding so that when you actually comb your hair you’ll still see your scalp because the hair is not surgically implanted. This is one of the most popular methods today.

Another option is what is called microscopic follicular unit hair transplants. A follicular unit is how hair actually grows, in groupings. A single unit can contain one to four hair follicles. These units also contain hairs that are not visible to the naked eye. Basically hair is transplanted into these invisible units. This method is said to have the highest growth rate and is the most effective for curing baldness.

Another option is Extreme Hair Therapy (EXT). EXT stimulates growth of hair in the balding areas. The way this method works is it keeps the hair follicles in their growth stage longer than normal which stimulates thicker hair growth and slows down the thinning process. This process is done at three levels. One, it improves scalp circulation and blood flow. Two, it reduces damage to the hair follicle by reacting with environmental factors. Three, it uses advanced hair loss therapies from around the world as they emerge.

Then of course there are your drugs like Minoxidil. This drug was actually an accident. It was first made to treat high blood pressure and they found out that one of the side effects was the ability to slow down or reverse the balding process. By applying this externally at about a 2% solution it actually starts to grow hair. This drug is now marketed under the name of Rogaine. The success of this drug however is limited and then there is always the option of staying bald. Be proud of your dome.

In this article we’re going to deal with the psychological problems of hair loss and the various ways to deal with them.

The truth is, hair loss and baldness in men is not the stigma that it was years ago. Today baldness is actually seen as sexy in some circles. Men like Telly Savalis, Yul Brenner, Michael Jordan, Patrick Stewart, Vin Diesel, Andre Agassi, Samuel L. Jackson, and even a woman like Persis Khambatta, who sizzled the screen in Star Trek The Motion Picture, have made baldness something that is looked at as quite attractive. Can you picture Captain Picard on the Enterprise with hair? Somehow I doubt it.

Still in some areas baldness is a problem, primarily in the workplace of professional men like accountants, lawyers, insurance salesmen and others. If you look around you will notice that the most successful men in these and many other business related fields have full heads of hair. The bald man doesn’t travel as far in many circles. Mostly because he doesn’t fit the executive "image" and therefore he will rarely move that far up the corporate ladder. Now once a man has achieved a position of president or vice president then it’s a different story. Seldom will anyone dare to make the boss feel insecure because he is bald. Unfortunately most male pattern baldness starts at a young age and they never even make it that far.

For women it is even worse. A bald woman in the workplace is looked at like a freak. In almost all societies a woman’s only recourse if she goes bald, usually because of a medical condition, or more likely from cancer treatment, is to go out and get a wig. While this will usually be noticeable unless one is purchased that looks exactly like her own hair did, it is her only option to dealing with the looks that she is certain to get.

So how does one deal with the psychological problems one is confronted with after going bald? Because aside from how others see you there is the problem with how you now feel about yourself. With men this is a difficult time. Many feel like they’ve lost a part of their manhood. They feel like less than a man. They’re not as confident when going out in public. They don’t feel as attractive to their wives. They feel like they’ve lost a friend that they’ve had their whole lives. Also it reminds them that they are getting old, though in reality much male pattern baldness starts very young. With women this can be one of the most traumatic times of their life.

So again, how DO they deal with baldness? Unfortunately the best way is to have the problem treated. See a dermatologist. Try to get to the root of the problem and correct it if possible. There are also support groups and a few Internet forums these people can go to but they’re not as readily available as support groups for alcoholics and drug addicts. Sadly, society doesn’t really think of baldness as a serious psychological issue even though, to the people who suffer from it, it can be one of the most traumatic times of their lives.

Hair loss. What causes it? I mean, one day it’s on your head and the next day it’s gone. Did gremlins sneak into your room in the middle of the night and cut it off? Well, not quite and hopefully after you’re finished reading this article you will understand why you’re losing your hair. It’s not because of your kids.

At any given point in time about 10% of the hair on your head is asleep. After about 2 or 3 months, this resting hair (yes, it takes long naps) falls out and new hair takes it’s place. The hair grows at a rate of about 1 centimetre per month. Not very fast. It is normal to experience some hair loss on a daily basis. But some men and women experience what is considered excessive hair loss.

So what causes this?

Well, a number of things actually. One way is after surgery or excessive stress. The hair loss is a direct result of this surgery or stress but is usually temporary.

If you have hormonal problems, this can cause hair loss as well. If your thyroid gland is overactive, this can cause hair loss. If your male and female hormones are out of balance, this can cause hair loss. Usually correcting the hormone imbalance can stop the hair loss.

Women usually have hair loss a few months after having a baby. This is also because of hormones. During pregnancy certain hormones are higher that keep hair from falling out. After pregnancy these hormones are lessened, so the hair begins to fall out. When the hormones return to the level before pregnancy the cycle returns to normal.

Some medications can cause hair loss. This usually improves once you stop taking the medicine. The biggest offenders are blood thinners, medicines used for gout and chemotherapy. Also birth control pills and anti depressants.

Some infections such as fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss. These however are easily treated.

Finally, hair loss can be caused by a more serious disease like lupus or diabetes. Hair loss is usually an early symptom of a disease, so it is best to get this checked out as soon as possible.

Also improper hair care can also cause hair loss. Using tight corn rows or hair rollers. Hot oil treatments can also cause hair loss as well as constant wearing of hats. The reason is because the hat prevents air from getting to the scalp and eventually the hair dies. Only wear a hat when necessary.

Then there is what they call "male pattern baldness." This is the most common cause of hair loss in men. This is an inherited trait, meaning that if your father went bald, there is a good chance that you will as well. Men who lose their hair at an early age usually have more extensive hair loss than other men. This type of baldness usually starts with a receding hair line at the front of the scalp.

In the next article we’ll discuss treatments for hair loss and hair replacement techniques.

Losing one’s hair can have a major emotional impact and cause much anguish in the long run. Studies indicate that perceptions of bald or balding men compared to men that have hair is that they are less physically attractive, less assertive, less successful and older. Although hair loss in women is not as common as it is in men, it can also result in the same perceptions of less attractive, less successful and older.

Abnormal hair loss is called alopecia. There are many different types of alopecia, including androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata and postpartum alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is the result of genetics, age and hormonal changes. In men it is known as male pattern baldness which usually progressed to the familiar horseshoe-shaped hair. In women it shows up as a generalized thinning over the entire crown area.

Alopecia areata is characterized by the sudden falling out of hair in round patches or baldness in spots. It can occur on the scalp or anywhere else on the body. It is an autoimmune disease that causes the affected hair follicles to be mistakenly attacked by a person’s own immune system. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total hair loss.

Postpartum alopecia is the temporary hair loss that women can experience at the conclusion of a pregnancy. Usually the growth cycle of the hair will return within one year after the baby is born.

There are many different options for people suffering from hair loss today. One is medication. A popular topical medication is Minoxidil, which is sold over the counter. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp twice a day and can be effective for some. There is also prescription medication for men that may be more effective than Minoxidil. But many prescription medications have side effects such as weight gain and loss of sexual function.

The second option is hair transplant surgery. Transplants, also known as hair plugs, are the most common permanent hair replacement technique. In the procedure, a small section of hair is removed from an area where there is a lot of hair. The entire hair follicle, papilla and bulb is removed and transplanted to the new location. Typical costs for this type of surgery ranges from $8,000-$20,000 and up.

The third option is to use wigs, toupees, hair weaving, hair extensions or hair integrations. Wigs and toupees can be custom designed using either human hair or synthetic hair. They have come a long way and can create a very natural looking style. Hair weaving involves sewing pieces of human or synthetic hair into the natural hair to create a fuller, long hair style look. Hair extensions are similar to hair weaving since you are attaching human or synthetic hair to the natural hair. Except hair extensions are attached by one of several different methods using adhesives, locs, links or clips. Hair integrations are custom designed nets with hair attached or even man-made skin with hair attached that are attached, typically using medical grade adhesives directly to the scalp to create a fuller hair style.

There can be complications to hair weaving, hair extensions and hair integrations. If they are not attached properly, by a trained hair stylist, the hair loss situation of the client can become worse, resulting in permanent hair loss with the extension hair pulling the natural hair out. Always consult with a professionally trained hair stylist that has experience with hair loss situations.

In short, hair loss may have a major emotional impact on many people. But as technology advances there are many more options for men and women suffering from hair loss.

In recent times, hair loss has become a common condition, especially among men although, the exact cause of hair loss is still a mystery. Some research studies have linked hair loss with the lack of iron, the condition of the skin on the scalp, an excess of the hormone DHT and probably an under active thyroid gland.

The hair, although it is thought of as dead, is a good indicator of general health and it is the first indicator that shows signs of ill health or lack of essential vitamins and minerals within the body. Oily hair can be a sign of vitamin B deficiency, brittle or dry hair can be an indicator of essential fats deficiency, dull hair color and poor growth can be signs of zinc deficiency and hair loss can be an indicator of lack of vitamin C, vitamin B1, iron and lysine. Grey hair comes with age and has no link to body health or nutrition and in most cases nutrition cannot be used to reverse it.

Although certain types of medicine are known to slow down the process of hair loss and even help with some form of hair re-growth, experts say that natural hair loss treatment can yield some of the best benefits for anyone concerned about the health of their hair.

Most people choose to treat their hair loss with medications or surgery, such as Minoxidil, Rogaine or a hair transplant. What these people fail to realize is that medication and surgery are costly and may carry some harmful side effects and risks. The safest and most cost effective form of hair loss therapy is natural hair loss treatment, which includes healthy dieting, herbal remedies, exercise and proper hair care techniques.

A fundamental principal in natural hair loss treatment is that the same foods that are good for your health are good for your hair. Hair loss can be caused by several factors, but lack of proper nutrition plays a vital role for most people. Foods that are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and have reduced fat content can help in maintaining healthier hair and preventing hair loss. For example, essential fatty acids, found in spinach, walnuts, soy, tuna, sardines, sunflower seeds and canola oil, are important dietary essentials useful in keeping hair healthy. The omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids contain anti-inflammatory properties that are useful in maintaining healthy hair. Insufficient levels of these essential fatty acids could lead to quicker hair loss.

To avoid hair loss and have good healthy hair, a good nutritional diet is needed. This diet needs to be rich in organic whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and seeds which are a rich source of vital nutrients needed for healthy hair roots and the protein keratin. Try not to skip meals, reduce salt, sugar, tea, coffee and chocolate intake, avoid stress, comb your hair gently and avoid using strong chemicals on your hair such as perms and color treatments. Vegetarians are prone to hair loss because their diet generally lacks the important nutrients, vitamin B12, iron and lysine. Vegetarians need to be aware of this and supplement their diet.

Besides taking the right diet pattern, several natural herbs are known to be very good in the prevention and treatment of hair loss. These herbs in most cases are safe; without harmful side effects and also cost effective. Among such herbs include nettles, usually taken in the form of Nettle Root Extract, which has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating hair loss. Nettles are rich in vitamins A and C that are beneficial in inhibiting DHT production and promoting hair growth as a natural hair loss treatment. Other traditional herbs that are useful as natural hair loss treatments are green tea, liquorice extract, horsetail, ginger, psoralea seeds, apple cider vinegar, rosemary and sage tea.

One important herb making the rounds in medical cycles is Saw Palmetto. Although most studies of Saw Palmetto have been for the treatment of prostatic disease, more recent studies have been conducted on its effectiveness in treating hair loss. The herb has been found to work in fighting benign prostatic disease by lowering levels of DHT, which is a known cause of androgenic alopecia, the medical term for male or female pattern hair loss. While there are no clinical trials supporting this herb’s usefulness as a natural hair loss treatment, there is some reliable research proving that it can slow down androgen activity within the hair follicle.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from hair loss.

B complex
Evening primrose oil
Fish oil
Kelp
Lysine
Multivitamins and multiminerals
Vitamin C

Hair loss is a common occurrence in almost everyone, though more pronounced in some people. If you are battling with this condition it would be wise to find treatment in your day to day items instead of spending a fortune on medical remedies that come with tons of side effects. Natural remedies are always safe, reliable and very cost effective, all you need is the right knowledge.

In our culture, hair loss remedies come with hefty price tags, painful surgical procedures, ingestion of tablets, and the application of creams. It seems like a whole lots of work just to keep a person happy with their physical appearance. Doesn’t it? But men and women have shed hair since the beginning of time. Being ‘bald’ isn’t a new concept. It makes one wonder what remedies other cultures use to prevent and interrupt the balding process.

Take a glance at some of these historic remedies. They may seem ridiculous to us–just like some of our remedies will seem laughable to someone in the year 2070.

In Victorian America

Can you picture yourself applying cologne, spirit of camphor, and a pigment of cantharides to the roots of your hair each night? This is one concoction that was used to treat hair loss. An additional ‘treatment,’ was the vigorous brushing of hair. Stiff brushes were used to promote soft and shiny hair, while soft hair brushes were believed to promote the growth of hair.

In Ancient Egypt

Oh, boy! The ancient Egyptians had some remedies for hair loss that may appear pretty wacky to us readers. For instance, the Egyptians believed that the application of chopped lettuce (to the bald area) would promote hair growth. Why lettuce, you may ask. Well, to the Egyptians, lettuce was associated with virility.

Another ‘remedy’ the Egyptians swore by was the application of castor oil to the scalp. Because the castor oil didn’t exactly smell pleasant, they often mixed this with sweet almond oil to create a soothing aroma.

In India

How far would you go to re-grow your hair? Indians once believed that by boiling sage leaves in coconut oil, that the liquid’s residue (once applied to hair) would cure balding.

In The Amazon

A banana a day keeps the surgeon away? Get this one: In the South American rainforests, the Taiwano Indians believed that hair loss and scalp problems could be treated with the heated extracts of bananas.

Modern Day North America

As you can see, we’ve come a long way. Or have we? Today our hair loss remedies promise consumers the moon. But are we ever happy with results? If you have a genetic disposition for balding early in life, it’s your choice to try pills, products, and surgical procedures. But ask yourself: will these treatments make you happy? Can one physical alteration make you feel young and virile?

Men that do not have genetic balding traits; who are experiencing hair loss; should take the following into consideration:

  • Tight hats, ponytails, and braids promote receding hairlines and thinning hair.
  • Bathe and groom yourself regularly.
  • Excessive worrying and stress can cause redundant shedding of hair and balding.
